Independence Day

No more counting to 20 for this guy... oh well, 15 is still a pretty big number.

A rough sketch for a Fourth of July cartoon I did about 10 years ago... I decided to redo it in color. Here's a link to the finished piece if you wanna check it out:

Independence Day Part II

More Cthulhu

Sample of Cthulhu illustrations for a fun book about H.P Lovecraft. A Lovecraft/Cthulhu for Dummies kind of thing. Just over twenty illustrations for the book, and a coloring book is in the works!

Copyright 2009 Drew Pocza and Atomic Overmind Press.

Evil Granny

This is Evil Granny. She looks sweet and nurturing on the outside, but don’t be fooled. On the inside she’s evil and menacing. She eats children for breakfast.

Typosters

This is one in a series of 6 posters I recently finished for Cape Farewell and the Eden Project.
The other 5 can be viewed on my blog.

Chocolate death

Cartoon for the Dutch Nu.nl news website, about the death of a man who had fallen into a vat of chocolate, combined with a wink to the death of popstar Michael Jackson.

Cassette Tape Art

Blue eyes linear tape illustration. (Click for larger image)

I've had the idea of doing an illustration such as the one above for a few years now but just haven't found the time to do so. Well a couple weeks ago someone shared the art of iri5 with me (Cool art!) and I realized I better hurry up and do my linear take on the same genre before it becomes old hat.

You can read more about this and see the process at my art blog.

Doodling what my cat would look like in a sweater. He already has enough fur, that's for sure.

SFG: SKETCH

This is the sketch for the painting I'm working on at the moment between jobs. In fact it's been on and off my drawing table for a month now and really hope to finish it very soon

Desktop

I decided to take one of my previous illo's and convert it into a desktop. I loved the black on white design of the illo so much I thought it would look good as a wallpaper. So I tested it for a few days on my computer and the design didn't bother me. I tend to like desktops where the design is not to in your face or distracting. Although for some, having a man staring at them may be distracting. Oh well, I just hope some of you enjoy it.
You can download it via my Deviant Art account at this link.
Enjoy!

Cat Tree

The sketch was done as a doodle in a meeting. The painting was done several months later after a bit of a debate in my head whether the painting would do the doodle justice. It never hurts to give it a try.

Ink & Mess: Two of Hearts for Amelia's Magazine

Here's my submission for Amelia's Magazine illustrated art card quilt. It's a brilliant, fun idea and also it's for charity - Shelter to be precise.

To find out more information please visit Amelia's Magazine. If you'd like to see all the best entries then trawl through this lot, there's some great ones in there!

SFG: Sketch

Okay, I'm only doing this because Jeff asked so nicely. :) Normally I'd be too self-conscious to share.

I'm learning to sketch. To be honest, I haven't kept a sketchbook/art journal since college, which was nearly 10 years ago. I know, I know. Bad Melissa! Bad Melissa! So I made a vow to fill my journal by the end of 2009. Daily doodles about the mundane aspects of life. Practicing is the first step, right? Eight pages down, 152 to go. Here's yesterday's entry:

Melissa Needs a Calendar!

I actually drew this on the 6th, but I obviously don't know how to read a calendar.

SFG: sketch

I recently started a new sketchbook as part of my daily sketch exercise. I am devoting this one exclusively to maps. Some of the maps will be of real places and some will be entirely fictional. Most will not really resemble the places that they represent, but will be extremely accurate.

Above is a map of the flight of a huge beetle that came into my studio the other day. You can see more of my maps and read about this adventure on my blog.

ps. if you are into looking at sketchbooks (and really, who isn't?) check out this wonderful resource... http://www.frenchdrawings.org/sketchbooks.php

Introducing dj kidd...

And here is the inked version...

Poor little blue girl, always falling for the wrong guy. But what else do you expect from a girl who has always worn her heart on her sleeve?

This was actually based off an old illustration that I decided to ink and update a bit. Here is what the original sketch looked like.

Enjoy...

SFG: Sketch

Sketch - This week's challenge is a fun one! There's something about the raw, unpolished sketches that we all do while working out an illustration that I just love. I urge you to post some of those sketches this week as part of the challenge. Post the finished product too if you'd like, that would be awesome!

The SFG Challenge was created to challenge every member to stretch their creative muscles, venture outside of their artistic boundaries and post their interpretations each week on a specific theme. You are enthusiastically encouraged to participate!

Don't forget to label your posts!

Have a great week!

-Jeff
